Academic Preparation and Coaching
University of Alberta, Arts Building in the Fall
Regardless of whether you are new to Canada, a Permanent Resident, or a Citizen, everyone needs help from time-to-time getting ready for Higher Education. Even Canadian students can experience a kind of “Culture Shock” when moving from school to a Post-Secondary experience. At  ESL in Edmonton we understand that —  and we can help. A RISING TIDE LIFTS ALL BOATS The reason developed and democratic countries invest in providing “free” or subsidized education to their people — at least to a certain base level, is because they recognize that a well educated population is better for everyone, and raises up the whole country.  . . .  As the old saying goes: “A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats”. It is especially important for democratic governments, to have well-informed, educated and thinking citizens, who are able to make reasoned decisions. From High School, there are as many different paths, as there are individuals. Once you know where you want to go however, if your goals include pursuing higher education, and if that means getting a little help along the way, you will want to talk to ESL in Edmonton. YOUR TRAINING GROUND — YOUR PROVING GROUND  High School is not the end. It is just the beginning. The question is, “Where do you go from here?”  Good success beyond High School, means you need to really succeed there first. Did you know that what you do in high school and how you do it, can make a world of difference to what you can do after that, and how many doors are opened to you? Did you know that not all high school paths are the same? Or that how you prepare in high school determines what you can do in the future? The courses and your grades matter. But so do the other activities you take part in — they all contribute to how desirable you are to the school of your dreams and how far you advance in the competition. It also determines financial assistance. Do you know how important your Advance Placement tests are to your future? Do you know how to prepare for them? If you hope that your future includes Post-Secondary studies, high school is your Training Ground. It is (or can be) intensive training to ready you for higher education. In particular, high school prepares you to research, analyze and write at that higher level. Well! That’s one of our specialties at ESL in Edmonton. High School is also your Proving Ground. It is the place you can prove yourself to decision-makers.  If you want a place to shine — to showcase your abilities, and to garner respect and opportunities, moving forward, that is your high school experience. If you do that well, your choices are wide-open. Contact Us about how we can help. ACADEMIC SKILLS — TOOLS FOR SUCCESS The skills we acquire in grade school are the tools we need to learn and work in the future. As we hone our academic and life skills, we prepare for the future we envision for ourselves. No one can do this on their own. Our parents, and then our teachers, guide us through through the maze of learning. The more teachers we have the more we can learn. Also, different teachers have different specialized knowledge and different approaches to teaching. As Students (of any age) we all have particular Learning Styles. Different Subject Matter, Explanations and Presentation Methods work differently for different people. At ESL in Edmonton we understand that. We also know that inside regular classes, many students can get left behind in certain areas. If you miss a thing the first time it is presented, you may never get another chance to properly learn what was missed. Sadly, the thing that most students learn the least, is the thing they need the most: English Language Arts. The subject in school is often referred to as “Language Arts” because learning English properly, truly does involve a collection of Arts. English is the one subject, that you need the most to excel in every other subject. Moreover, with or without the other components and instruction in English, the higher you go, the more important Good Writing Skills become. Be sure to check out our Writing Workshops to see what is most important to you. The better your English, and especially your writing ability, the further you progress — in your Academic, your Professional AND your Personal life. That’s why, at ESL in Edmonton we put so much attention on the essentials like Grammar, Semantics, Syntax, and Pragmatics. Certainly, you don’t need to become a Linguist and learn a lot of technical terms to learn English, but it sure helps to have a TEACHER that gets it … and can help you get it too. That’s what you get with ESL in Edmonton. Ask us what we can do for you.
