CLASSICS for ALL AGES
ESL in Edmonton uses a combination of Classic Literature including Shakespeare and other Great English Writers and Thinkers, (at any level and depending on the level and needs of students) and a collection of Proprietary Lesson Materials designed especially for our students. ESL in Edmonton goes to lengths to make sure that we “fill in the gaps” in students’ knowledge and understanding by following a logical, practical, curriculum but combining it with personalized materials and instruction.
“A Classic” is something that is generally considered to be an example the highest quality, standard or rank. It is something is of “considerable age” — relative to the general “lifespan” of the kind of thing that it is. A Classic Car might be at least 50 years old. A Classic Song might be only 15-20 years old. A Classic piece of Furniture is likely at least 100 years old.
A Classic piece of Literature may be as “young” as 100 years old, but may often be many hundreds of years old. Shakespeare, who is generally considered to be greatest writer in the in the English Language — ever — wrote from the last part of the1500s to the early 1600s. So, “A Classic” is also something that “has stood the test of time”, meaning simply, that it was good at the time of creation, and it is still good today. When a story is that good, it is retold, over and over again, with many variations. It gets made into, many different forms … from movies to cartoons. Classics come in a form every age can enjoy and learn from.
We do not offer tutoring in every subject. ESL in Edmonton was originally started to help immigrants to Canada, but we quickly started getting enquires about tutoring students (grades 1-12) whether English is their first or second language. Since we teach an Integrated Approach which naturally combines History, Culture, Art, Geography as well as some parts of other subjects such as Science, it only makes sense that we expanded our offerings. Therefore we now specialize in English and Social Studies as an Integrated Approach.
AN INTEGRATED APPROACH
An Integrated Approach not only gives your child excellent instruction in English and all the important elements of the Language Arts, it reinforces the other lessons your child will be getting in school. Moreover, ESL in Edmonton uses an ever-growing collection of different methods and materials to reach different sensory and processing centres of your brain. We are BIG on helping students make CONNECTIONS between words, vocabulary, parts of speech and concepts. This is because, as we keep telling our students:
“Everything is Connected!”
The Integrated Approach offered by ESL in Edmonton means lessons are designed so that while students are learning English, they are also learning about Canadian History, Culture, Government, Heroes and Values as well as Social Studies that align with school curriculums . . . and various bits from a whole lot of other subjects. All this leads to a fuller, smoother, and more successful academic experience and advancement.
