ESL in Edmonton started with Tutoring Adult Newcomers to Canada who wanted and needed to learn English. In no time however, we were getting calls from people wanting to know if we could Tutor their children (native or immigrant) in English. ESL in Edmonton always takes an INTEGRATED APPROACH* to teaching — which naturally includes Canadian and International History, Government and Culture … in short, Social Studies. So, it was an obvious small step to begin Tutoring students of all ages at ESL in Edmonton.
SO MANY REASONS TO GET A TUTOR — ALL OF THEM, YOURS!
There are lots of reasons a person may want Tutoring. Some of these reasons may vary depending on the age, level and goals of the student. But at their core, the reasons are the same: Better Learning, Understanding, and Self-Improvement. All students may experience some reservations or anxiety over entering into classes, studying and working towards achieving good results. No matter the age or the grade, studies always have to compete with other activities and responsibilities. That is when talking to a tutor from ESL in Edmonton can really help.

TWO CATEGORIES OF YOUNGER STUDENTS
Younger students especially, tend to fall into one of two groups. The first group is made up of students who either started school with a disadvantage, or began more or less equal with the rest of their class, but for some reason, they are falling behind. When teachers and parents realize that this could become a trend that threatens future progress, a reasonable solution may be a tutor. The second group generally includes students who are meeting, or even excelling, achievement levels but whose parents are more ambitious for their children and may wish to advance further, faster, and want them to “push their limits”.
In either case, the decision to get a tutor is not the student’s. This often puts the process and the results at risk — even before lessons have begun. In both cases, getting a tutor is a good idea. Failing students can catch-up and keep-up. Achieving students can reach their full potential. Unfortunately, not every tutor-student combination is a good fit. If the student isn’t “on board”, or the tutor isn’t the right one, the results could be disappointing. What’s more, a negative first experience could make future attempts even more difficult. This is why,
at ESL in Edmonton, we recommend that parents speak with their child in advance, to get agreement and commitment to the process.
We also recommend that you talk to us about your, and your child’s, specific needs and expectations.**
OLDER STUDENTS: HIGH SCHOOL, POST-SECONDARY, MATURE/ADULT
The first advantage that older students have, is that they are older. With a little age, comes the ability to recognize that a good future depends upon a thoughtful and deliberate plan for the future . . . followed by the hard work that your hopes and dreams deserve. High School Student, Post-Secondary Candidate or Mature Adult, when you come to that realization that your future (and that of your family) depends on you continuing, up-grading and advancing your education, the battle is half-won. Once you have the foresight and the motivation, all you need, is a tutor to get you started and help you along the way, and there is no stopping you.
As you master your own subject matter, you master your future. ESL in Edmonton can supply you with the tools, tips, strategies and techniques that you need. We have the knowledge and expertise to help you realize your dreams.
